SUGA Explains Why He Decided To Cut His Hair Short Despite His Mom Preferring It Long

Over time, the style of BTS members has gradually evolved, shaping them into global artists in their 30s. Among them, SUGA’s changing style has been one of the most talked-about topics among fans—so much so that it even became a question in a GQ interview.

The BTS members have noted that SUGA’s appearance has become more “introspective” and artistic over time. j-hope even commented, “I think SUGA’s style has become a bit more ‘rock,’” referring to his overall image and especially his long hair, while RM remarked that the hairstyle made him look like a “prince.”

In response, SUGA revealed that this change actually began about three years ago. The reason behind his long hair, however, was quite simple. He shared, “The reason I grow out my hair is because my parents like it. That’s really the only reason. My mom always liked my hair longer", then added that when his parents saw him with a shaved head during his military service, his father commented, "Long hair suits you better.”

In another livestream, he also admitted, "Honestly, I don’t really care about the length of my hair, but my mom really likes my long hair. She was very sad when I cut it.” In a separate lighthearted conversation with j-hope, when j-hope asked if he couldn’t say no to his mom about keeping long hair, SUGA shared a humorous anecdote: “People were telling me getting a haircut was a good idea so I told them my mom liked the long hair and they said — you looked good with long hair too.”

Although he had grown accustomed to his long-haired image and received support from both his family and those around him, ARMYs still noticed that SUGA recently cut his hair short again, starting from the release of the ARIRANG album. This surprised many and sparked curiosity about the reason behind the change. Fortunately, in a recent livestream after the final concert in Tampa, SUGA addressed the topic directly and answered fans’ questions.

He got straight to the point: “I cut mine because you have long hair,” referring to Jimin, who is currently known for his bold long hairstyle. Jimin quickly added, “But everyone was against it…,” revealing that many people were not in favor of SUGA cutting his hair short. However, SUGA then offered a rather υиєχρє¢тє∂ explanation: “There can't be two people with long hair on one team.”

At that point, Jimin seemed to understand and shared, “Even at work it was like, ‘ah, maybe you should cut your hair,’ but I really wanted to try a change for once.”

The story became even more interesting when both revealed their families’ reactions. SUGA said, “My dad liked my long hair,” while Jimin shared, “My mom was my only supporter.”

This exchange between SUGA and Jimin highlights the issue of visual identity within a group. To ensure that each member maintains a distinct image and doesn’t overlap with others’ concepts on stage, SUGA proactively changed his hairstyle. While not a strict requirement, it demonstrates his thoughtfulness in maintaining the group’s visual balance and preserving each member’s uniqueness. At the same time, it reflects SUGA’s strong sense of teamwork—and that of BTS as a whole.

Meanwhile, Jimin’s comments suggest that the company side (stylists or management) also carefully considers how to balance the group’s overall image. His persistence in wanting to experiment shows his dedication to this change. In fact, BigHit Music’s Vice President Kim Hyun Jung (also known as Nicole Kim) confirmed in a recent interview with JoongAng Daily: “Jimin’s long hair was his own idea.”

And his idea has been completely successful. Since the “BTS Comeback Live: ARIRANG” stage at Gwanghwamun Square on March 21, he has gone viral with his flowing blonde long hair, earning nicknames like “Lion King Jimin” and “Grand Duke of the North.” Many have even compared him to characters from Game of Thrones, likening him to figures such as Jon Snow or the Stark and Targaryen houses, affectionately calling him “Stark Jimin” or “Targaryen Jimin.”

Through this story, fans have come to admire even more the members’ teamwork and the sharpness of their personal decisions, which ultimately contribute to the group’s overall success, commenting:

- Jimin and Yoongi, we love both of your long hair. And look at that, we can see again how much BTS love each others

- "The only supporter was mommy" oh Jimin how cute. But Yoongi, it can be 2 people with long hair in BTS. Next time, hope we can get YoonMin in long hairs too

- So Yoongi really cut his hair just for his baby. Jimin wants his hair long but 1 team can't have 2 people with long hair. They're real family

- Both he and Jimin shine in their own unique way. This reminds me of how they once said they value the group more than themselves.

- SUGA cutting his hair for the sake of the group’s visual balance really shows how thoughtful and team-oriented he is. Jimin’s determination has also paid off. Our boys know exactly what they want to do

- Jimin standing his ground and wanting to try long hair proves how confident he is in expressing his own style

- The contrast between SUGA and Jimin’s decisions just shows how well they complement each other as members in BTS

- SUGA sacrificing his long hair so Jimin can shine feels like such a clαѕѕic BTS teamwork moment

- Their conversation was hilarious, but it also revealed how much thought goes into even small details like hairstyles in BTS

- Even with short hair, Yoongi still looks incredibly handsome and stylish—it actually helps both him and Jimin have their own spotlight
