RM Reveals The Healing Method That Helped Him Overcome The Military Trauma, Leaving ARMYs Bursting Into Sobs

Many ordinary people like us have experienced mental health struggles — sleepless nights, prolonged stress, or, at worst, bouts of depression. So for celebrities, these challenges can be even more intense. BTS is no exception!

Remember that on the very day of his discharge in June, during a live broadcast where RM enjoyed a drink and chatted with fans about his time in the military, he ѕнσ¢кed ARMYs by revealing that he had to take medication and see a psychologist because his insomnia had become severe during the 18 months of his service.

At that time, he shared: "I αѕѕumed I’d handle it well, but it turned out military life was pretty tough for me. Even basic training was hard, and the living conditions weren’t great—like, imagine 20 people living in one container with cramped sleeping spaces. Sleep was the hardest part. I’d feel sleepy but just couldn’t fall into a deep sleep."

He also recalled: "Around April or May last year (2024), I had severe insomnia—to the point where I couldn’t sleep for 78 hours straight. I felt like a zombie. My mental state was unstable, so I went to see a psychiatrist and had to start taking sleeping pills. I would lie in bed for 3 to 4 hours, just staring at the ceiling, unable to sleep. I was тєяяιfιє∂ of nighttime. Every time I had a leave and came home, I’d just pαѕѕ out from exhaustion. The psychiatrist said it was because of the military environment and that things would gradually get better."

"I’ve been going through therapy and taking sleep meds for a year and two months now. There were some side effects, so we had to change the medication. I still can’t stop taking them completely, but I’m doing better now. My fellow sol∂ιєrs are all aware of my situation—they’ve been incredibly supportive and understanding. Since April, I’ve been feeling much more stable mentally, probably because I know I’ll be discharged soon."

In other words, until June this year, his insomnia had only improved, not fully resolved, and he still had to maintain his treatment with medication. When the leader shared this, fans were deeply heartbroken and worried about his condition.

So, during the most recent live broadcast in November, some fans asked about his health and whether it had improved. Fortunately, he brought positive news. "I have stopped taking (sleep) medications now, I don't take it anymore. Just in case, I do have some of the prescribed medicine with me, kind of like a charm. But even if I do go to sleep a bit late I don't need the medications anymore, so I'm not taking it. Because if you take medication you kind of become dull and feel like a zombie a bit,” RM excitedly shared with fans.

Notably, he mentioned that he hadn’t needed medication to sleep well since around mid-July while living in Los Angeles. Many fans immediately recalled that period, when RM and the other BTS members stayed in a villa — the group’s creative retreat in the U.S. — to work on a new album. They quickly realized that the joyful life with the six BTS members during that time was likely a major factor in helping RM overcome his condition.

There are many stu∂ιєs from the U.S., נαραи, and ¢нιиα highlighting the important role of family and loved ones for people suffering from insomnia due to mental health issues or depression. Experts also emphasize that “family identification” — the degree to which someone feels a sense of belonging and recognition within their family — affects sleep quality. Those with stronger family connections tend to feel less lonely and depressed, which in turn helps them sleep better.

It’s a relief that his condition has improved, and fans are even more moved knowing that the BTS members played a part in helping RM return to a normal life. Over more than a decade, BTS members have always been like this, supporting and caring for each other to overcome difficulties together. Their bond is so deep that Jin even once expressed: “I think I cherish them (BTS) enough to give them a kidney if they’re sick.”

ARMYs flooded social media with tearful, heartfelt comments:

- This makes me so happy to hear Joon say this. Tells me he is back with his brothers…his support and bliss. They are his stress relief. Where he should always be. Life has stresses for us all but BTS is there for us and for Joon.

- They members means sm to each other that we can never measure the depth of love and respect they share for each other

- So glad he is off meds. It really hurt my heart that he was so stressed that he needed them. Stress doesn’t go away but he is back with his brothers (his coping system) and it is clear that they belong together.

- Oh thank God. I knew the military was s*cking the life out of his soul. Luckily, with BTS by his side, he was able to find healing

- Being in the military is no joke, I’m sure. If I remember correctly & the translation was accurate, even Tae, who appeared to have made the most of the situation told his hyung Jin that he went to a scary place. I hope I can find that clip but I can’t. Being back in the civilian life and back to creating music must have helped settle Namjoon’s mind when it’s time to sleep. In LA, being with the members who he shared his life with closely for over 10 years must have also filled in the vacuum in his heart that I’m sure all of them must have experienced during their separation.

- waaaa I'm really crying right now. don't spare them anymore

- The thought of the members being a form of healing/therapy for Joon makes me tear up. that’s a family

- they not only heal us, they heal each other too. I'm not crying you are!

- Love and positive surrounding can heal everything. BTS is truly family

- remember when taehyung said ‘ we were happy every day in The U.S’ Yeah never separate them again!

- the way they heal each others everytime… oh my precious Bangtan….
