In K-pop, the phrase “K-pop ¢υяѕє” or “the 7-year ¢υяѕє” is very well-known. It refers to the phenomenon where idol groups often disband or change their lineup after a certain period of activity, especially after seven years since their debut.
Many famous groups such as 2NE1, Miss A, SISTAR, Infinite, BEAST, and even many 3rd and 4th generation groups have not been able to maintain their original lineup as when they first debuted. Later on, the members often pursued solo activities rather than gathering together again.
Therefore, seven years has become a kind of superstition that fans are extremely obsessed with! But in reality, there are many direct reasons why most groups cannot maintain their original lineup after seven years rather than it being an actual ¢υяѕє.
For example, the standard contract between idols and кσяєαn entertainment companies usually lasts seven years (according to the regulations of the кσяєα Entertainment Producers Association). When this term expires, many groups do not renew their group contracts due to issues with their agencies, differences in opinions among members, varying levels of popularity, or personal pressure.
For a global K-pop superstar group like BTS, their full seven-member lineup after 12 years of activity is extremely extraordinary. They are often admired as one of the few idol groups that have broken the seven-year ¢υяѕє. Moreover, not only have they not disbanded, but BTS have also sustained their fame and outstanding success throughout this decade — soмєтнing almost no other group has achieved.
To overcome the “¢υяѕє” that has haunted many idol groups, BTS obviously has their own secret — directly addressing the core issue that leads to disbandment: the lack of unity among members.
In a conversation with Lee Young Ji, Jin shared: "One of the reasons why we are so successful is that each of the members concedes what he wants to do for the other members."
Jin also emphasized the importance of putting the interests of the majority above the desires of the minority. He implied that the “celebrity syndrome” is the real problem to be worried about, but BTS have tried to avoid it because they know it could break their harmony.
In addition, Jin also mentioned that all seven members are careful not to do anything that could harm others. Moreover, he is very grateful that they are aligned with their goals, which makes the group’s music and promotional plans more feasible.
His original words were: "It’s hard to maintain a team if there is a person who wants to do whatever he wants as he thinks he is successful. However, each one of us does not cross the line and concedes what he wants to do for the other members. I think that’s why we can maintain our team".
Every one of us has an ego, and in such a high-pressure environment like K-pop, that ego can easily grow even bigger. But it’s important to remember that you debut in a group, not as a solo artist.
When you are alone, you can do anything to make yourself successful. But when you live in a team, to grow strong and sustainable, the collective interest must come first. If you only follow your own will regardless of the group’s survival, then what is the meaning of all the effort you made to debut in a group in the first place?
The members not only understand this core value by heart but also use it as a compαѕѕ to strengthen both their friendship and the future of the group under the name BTS!
This has been reflected through many stages of BTS’s journey. Back in 2018, the group once considered disbanding due to heavy pressure, but in the end, when they sat down and talked, they decided to continue and overcome it together.
Another recent stage was at the end of 2022 when BTS began their military enlistment period, and the members had to carry out solo activities. Yet their goal has always been to enrich the group’s color when they reunite. Just two weeks after their discharge, BTS members immediately announced their plan to return as a group in the spring of 2026, showing a strong will to reunite.
Besides Jin, RM also mentioned this key in an international interview: “All seven of us are different, you know. We're really incredibly different. … I describe it: it’s like we're all sailing in the same boat but looking at different places. We have different dispositions, we're good and bad at different things, … but because we're in this team, … we’re achieving things together under the name of BTS that we couldn’t do otherwise.”
In the end, there is no ¢υяѕє that cannot be broken! BTS didn’t rely on luck or superstition — it was their unity, friendship, and collective will that became their most powerful charm.
