Looking at the industry as a whole, most idol groups are created to serve the mαѕѕ market, meaning their primary goals are usually entertainment and commercial success. In K-pop, the most common model is one in which the management company develops the concept, in-house producers or well-known outside songwriters create the music, while the idols focus on training and performing. Albums are also designed to align with market demand, trends, and profitability.
Particularly among newer generations of K-pop, many нιт songs gain popularity more for their entertainment value and audiovisual experience than for delivering profound messages. A catchy hook within the first 10–20 seconds, a memorable chorus, or choreography capable of sparking viral social media challenges can be enough for a song to become a phenomenon.
However, going against this trend, BTS believes that what they want to pursue is not merely producing нιт songs but also delivering messages with lasting significance!

In BTS Dinner Party 2.0, leader RM made a statement on this topic that caught the attention of many fans: “Still, I see us as almost the last line of defense in terms of giving a message and putting soмєтнing out into the world. We're still one of the last generations that can talk about soмєтнing. And because there are seven of us I think we can deliver a more pop-oriented and universal message.” The other members also expressed their agreement with RM's perspective.
RM then used “SWIM,” the title track from BTS's ARIRANG album released at the end of March, as an example. He summarized his thoughts by saying: “I actually think ‘SWIM’ itself is a really good pop song but it was tied to the concept of Arirang, and then with our comeback we had so many things to do, so it was hard to give ‘SWIM’ enough weight.”
Earlier, during a live broadcast with fans, RM also provided a detailed explanation of what he and the group intended to express through “SWIM.” According to RM, “I wanted this to become a meaningful song,” and the track is not simply a love song but also a reflection on life itself. The “you” in the lyrics could refer to someone he loves, the fans, himself, or even life itself. He even described it as the song he would want to hear at his own funeral because it contains joy, sorrow, anger, and happiness all at once.
BTS is certainly not the only group to create music with meaningful messages. However, what makes them distinctive is that themes such as the pressures of youth, personal identity, mental health, maturity, and reflections on society have been consistently explored throughout their career spanning more than a decade. This artistic philosophy has never changed!
In an interview with Billboard about the creation of ARIRANG, Chairman Bang Si-hyuk also discussed the shared goal between himself and the group: “We made a conscious decision: to deeply respect the genre and musical traditions we come from – but never remain confined by them. At the same time, we wanted the lyrics and messaging to reflect, more honestly than before, how we see the world and what we feel in this very moment.” This statement further reinforces RM's description of BTS as “the last line of defense” when it comes to delivering a message and putting soмєтнing meaningful out into the world.

Moreover, BTS is different because its members directly participate in shaping and leading the group's musical direction. Producer Ryan Tedder emphasized on The Zach Sang Show that many people mistakenly believe HYBE or Bang Si-hyuk is behind every decision BTS makes, when in reality the opposite is true. “They are not. BTS is picking everything. Yeah. They're writing. They're picking the songs. They picked the direction. It came directly from that group. There's no, you know, string pulling,” he said frankly.

BTS is therefore significantly different from the traditional idol model, in which the company typically plays the dominant role in determining the music and the messages the idols present—especially among many newer-generation groups!
Fans could not hide their admiration and pride in response to RM's remarks, praising his statement with overwhelming support: "Without lyrics nothing makes sense, hope they don’t change", "I've said this about BTS. They are the last vanguard of style AND substance for this generation", "Such an amazing human", "BTS differs from the whole industry. Proud of our men", "This is exactly why BTS are not just idols—they are true artists", "They don't chase trends; they create music with lasting value", "That's what makes them so rare, the one and only", ...
