For music enthusiasts, streaming platforms and music charts have long become an integral part of the listening experience. Within K-pop fandom culture in particular, listening to music has evolved into what fans commonly call "streaming." Stream counts have become an important measure of an artist's popularity, influencing prestigious awards and serving as a source of pride for an entire fandom.
However, when numbers become a form of power, questions inevitably arise—including concerns about the accuracy and reliability of those numbers. Recently, Last.fm found itself at the center of criticism from ARMYs over precisely this sensitive issue!
Last.fm is a music-focused social networking and listening-tracking platform that was founded in 2002. Because its database spans decades and reflects users' real listening habits, many people regard it as a credible source. While its charts do not affect Billboard rankings, Last.fm's data is often seen as a reflection of both mainstream popularity and fandom strength.

However, what Last.fm has recently done regarding BTS has led many ARMYs to question the platform's credibility!
The controversy began when fans compared data on Last.fm's latest charts. According to the rankings, singer Olivia Rodrigo currently sits at No. 1 on the Artists chart with approximately 762,000 unique listeners and around 31 million scrobbles. BTS, meanwhile, is ranked No. 45 with roughly 334,000 listeners. What many fans found difficult to understand was the fact that BTS had accumulated approximately 86.2 million scrobbles—nearly three times more than Olivia Rodrigo.

For those unfamiliar with Last.fm's system, a "scrobble" can be understood as a recorded play generated when a user listens to a qualifying song through a connected platform. A "listener," on the other hand, refers to the number of unique accounts that have listened to a particular artist during a given period. In other words, if one person listens to a BTS song 100 times, the system will record 100 scrobbles but only one listener.
Even so, many ARMYs argue that the gap between BTS's listener count and scrobble count appears highly unusual. They have also questioned how an artist with such an overwhelmingly high number of plays could rank so low on the overall chart.
The controversy escalated further when fans discovered several interactions between Last.fm and other users that appeared to accuse BTS's streams of being generated by bots or otherwise showed hostility toward the group. One fan captured a screenshot, warning ARMYs to beware of Last.fm. She also noted that many of ARMYs had not had their streams recorded for over 10 hours and expressed disbelief that one of the only artists selling out stadiums globally supposedly did not belong in the top artists charts.

The debate surrounding Last.fm's transparency has since reached a boiling point. Many users have expressed confusion over the platform's мєтнodology, while others are demanding a clear explanation of how its data is calculated. On the other hand, some fans have reacted with outright anger, accusing Last.fm of operating in a questionable manner, favoring Western artists, and unfairly diminishing BTS.
As confidence in Last.fm continues to waver, some fans have begun encouraging others to delete the application entirely and stop linking it to their Spotify or Apple Music streaming accounts.

Among the many reactions circulating online, comments surrounding the controversy include:
