The exhibition titled “RM x SFMOMA: Between You and Me” will officially open on October 3, but preview sessions for museum members and the press have already been held since September 30. Tickets for these preview sessions have sold out.
The exhibition features 178 artworks — including 142 pieces from RM’s personal collection and 36 works from SFMOMA’s collection. SFMOMA Director Christopher Bedford described it as the largest кσяєαn art exhibition in the museum’s 91-year history.

RM has built his collection over nearly a decade, and this exhibition focuses on artists whose works hold particular personal meaning for him. RM personally wrote the exhibition texts and recorded the audio guide in both кσяєαn and English. Notably, the кσяєαn text on the exhibition walls was handwritten by RM himself.
This exhibition can be said to carry a strong personal touch from RM as its curator, with the works interpreted from his perspective and accompanied by stories connected to his own life. One work titled People, which has been receiving lively discussion among fans, is perhaps the clearest example of this distinctive feature.
Through several photos shared by fans who had the chance to attend RM’s exhibition previews, the artwork can be seen depicting a man and a woman leaning against a wall and talking to each other. Their faces are not visible, but their relaxed and carefree poses make the scene look almost like a couple flirting with each other. Their outfits are simple yet polished, while the distinctive mid-20th-century photographic style gives the everyday scene a particularly captivating quality.

What surprised fans even more was the story behind the artwork. In an audio recording made by RM, he revealed that the photograph had once been displayed at his parents’ home, and he had “borrowed” it from them to bring to his own exhibition. “I just took it from them. ‘I need this for the exhibition, so I'm bringing it.’ They told me like, ‘Okay, bring another photograph,’” he recalled humorously.
One particular comment from RM especially touched fans: “It makes me think of, maybe my parents would look like this when they were dating in their young ages.”

RM also shared another amusing story about how he often “takes” things from his parents’ home: “Like sometimes when I take soмєтнing out of their houses, ‘Oh, where is that, piece that we loved in our bedroom or our living room?’ It's like, ‘Ah, I just... I liked it more, so I just brought it to my home.’ Like, can you give it back again?’”
These things reminded fans of RM’s previous comments about how his concept of marriage had changed quite a bit—particularly after seeing the happiness of his parents. During a livestream at the time, RM shared “When my parents were my age, they were already married and had a three-year-old child,” and added, “My parents went to school together from elementary school, dated for nine years, and lived just five minutes apart. Seeing my parents like that, I naturally thought that I’d get married too.”

RM’s family was built on the sweet and happy love story of his parents, a relationship that has clearly been soмєтнing he admires. The photograph that once hung on his parents’ wall and has now been carefully brought by RM to SFMOMA is more than just an artwork. It can also be seen as a legacy of love that he inherited from his family — the place that gave him a strong foundation to become the mature and thoughtful man he is today.
Fans could not help but express their emotions and admiration after seeing the artwork and listening to RM’s interpretation of it:
- He is so full of love …I cant do this man. He may be Kim Namjoon, the multi millionaire leader of BTS and the world’s biggest Army but behind all that he’s just someone’s son
- You can really feel how much his family means to him. I love how RM doesn’t just collect art, he attaches memories and emotions to the pieces he chooses
- Can you imagine his parents came to the exhibition yesterday and saw half their art they were мιѕѕιиg and didn’t know what happened to it
- He really loves people (the opposite of me), and has such a positive outlook on humans. Because he was raised in a family filled with happiness, I have no doubt that our leader has such a warm heart
- Love that Namjoon is affectionately stealing things he loves from his parents. Somehow that man is full of love in υиєχρє¢тє∂ ways
- I love everything about this segment. He’s got such a great view on the world and he’s so funny. I just liked it more
- This story makes the artwork feel even more special. It’s not just a photograph anymore, but a beautiful piece of RM’s family history
- This exhibition is such a treasure trove of Namjoon’s thoughts and his stories. What an invaluable gift to be able to listen to his musings, I am in complete αωє. In another life, these are topics I’d long for the chance to discuss with him, so now at least I get to have this
