RM’s Cousin Opens Up About Having A Globally Famous Superstar Brother For The First Time

BTS is currently at the center of global attention thanks to the phenomenal success of ARIRANG, an album that has topped the Billboard 200 three times, as well as a world tour that continues to sell out and generate significant economic impact in every city it visits. This comeback has not only restored the group's spotlight but has further cemented their status as the "Pop Icons of the 21st Century."

Meanwhile, on a personal level, leader RM was appointed the first-ever Global Communications Ambαѕѕador of the National Museum of кσяєα on the 20th. An artist who has already played a major role in promoting кσяєαn popular culture on the international stage has now taken on the additional responsibility of introducing the value of кσяєα's cultural heritage to the world. The combination is expected to create an even greater cultural impact.

BTS's and RM's position as global superstars is undoubtedly a tremendous source of pride for their families and relatives. At the same time, however, such extraordinary fame can bring its own pressures. As it turns out, having a cousin who is one of the most famous celebrities in the world is not always easy either—a reality that was first revealed by RM's cousin during a previous interview. More importantly, it was RM's thoughtful way of overcoming those challenges that ultimately moved her deeply.

Longtime fans may already know that RM has a cousin named Ji Yeon Seo, an MMA fιgнтer. She is a professional female boxer, widely known by the nicknames “Magikarp” and “Honey Bee.” Having begun her professional career in 2017, she has recorded an impressive 8 wins out of 12 matches. Notably, she also won a gold medal at an international competition just three years into her career.

Despite her recognition in her own field, it was not until a 2019 interview that she surprised many by revealing her familial connection to the superstar. She said, "We are cousins. Sometimes during vacation, we see each other."

Given their busy schedules and the distance that often comes with family gatherings, it is understandable that RM and Ji Yeon Seo do not meet frequently. However, that does not mean they have a distant relationship. She admitted they were close growing up, but things changed as they got older. Once her cousin became a global superstar, she felt too intimidated to reach out to him.

She candidly shared, "He's the cousin I've seen since I was little, but when he's become such a super star, it's hard to approach him first and try to get close". She worried that her familiarity might make him uncomfortable or put him in an awkward position.

Another reason she was hesitant to speak publicly about their relationship had to do with fans. She explained, "But he still cheered me on and told me to work hard. I purposely didn’t talk about this in fear of ιиѕυℓтing BTS fans, but I am proud that I have a cousin who is famous around the world"

Most importantly, RM's kindness and consideration helped preserve their close bond. At one point, he gifted his cousin a signed copy of The Most Beautiful Moment in Life album along with a handwritten message that read: "Jiyeon, how have you been? I hope you stay healthy and happy while you're studying. Keep fιgнтing!" In addition, when BTS held concerts in Seoul, RM personally invited her to attend.

RM appears to understand that fame can create invisible barriers that gradually distance people from those around them. Not only RM, but other BTS members have also addressed this issue. In one interview, Jin openly spoke about the changes he experienced after becoming a top K-pop star: "Jiyeon-ah, how are you? Wish you always healthy and happy during your time at school! Be strong!"

In reality, Jin, RM, and the other BTS members have never displayed arrogance or flaunted their fame in a way that alienates others. Still, it cannot be denied that becoming K-pop idols has inevitably created a certain distance between them and their friends—or even family—due to various sensitive circumstances.

As a result, one of the most important things idols can do is recognize that reality and actively work to overcome it. In RM's case, despite his demanding schedule, he has consistently shown care and thoughtfulness toward his cousin Yeon Seo, making sure she never felt pressured or uncomfortable. His willingness to take the initiative and stay in touch ultimately preserved the warm, sibling-like bond they share, preventing it from being eroded by time and unspoken distance.

BTS as a whole, and RM in particular, place great importance on relationships with family and those closest to them. This reflects their admirable character and unwavering sincerity, even after achieving the highest status in society. It is precisely this balance—between the stature of global artists and deeply grounded inner lives—that makes BTS distinct and admirable, while enabling them to maintain a genuine and lasting connection with the public and fans around the world.
