Within the fandom, Lea Salonga is a longtime ARMY and a respected voice in the fan community, earning respect not only for her love for BTS but also for her status in the entertainment industry. However, Lea Salonga was recently reported to have unfollowed RM and j-hope on Instagram after the two were drawn into the controversy surrounding Chris Brown. The move left many fans disappointed while sparking a new debate within the ARMY community.
Some ARMYs said they could understand Salonga’s disappointment with RM and j-hope, but felt that unfollowing only the two members was excessive and unfair. Many also questioned the consistency of the singer’s stance, as she still follows several celebrities who have had connections with Chris Brown, including H.E.R., John Bellingham, Sienna Lalau, Bruno Mars, Ariana Grande, and the GRAMMYs. Some also brought up her past encounters or interactions with other figures whom they believe have been involved in controversial behavior.

This led some fans to question whether the standards Salonga applied to RM and j-hope were truly consistent. One fan harshly commented: “She demands from BTS the standards she herself doesn't live up to. She is punishing namseok for 1 mistake that she herself does repeatedly.” After receiving significant backlash from ARMYs, Lea Salonga responded to these questions through a post on Threads, further explaining the reason behind her controversial decision.
According to the Filipino singer, unfollowing RM and j-hope was not intended to punish the two members. Instead, it was a personal decision aimed at protecting her own mental health. Salonga admitted that she had become increasingly uncomfortable after seeing RM and j-hope attend a show featuring Chris Brown and Usher, to the point where she realized that the situation was negatively affecting her emotionally.
In her Threads post, Salonga wrote: “I’m not punishing them as one unfollow in the greater scheme of things is literally nothing to them. I’m doing it for me as I need to examine my own mind and heart right now.” The singer also pointed out that RM and j-hope are far too prominent for a single unfollow to have any real impact on them.

Salonga also directly addressed questions about the consistency of her own actions. She admitted that she had previously taken photos with or interacted with people whom she now considers problematic. Rather than denying it, the singer said she had taken time to reflect on those moments, hold herself accountable, and remind herself to make better choices in the future.
When it comes specifically to RM, Salonga appears to have left the door open. She wrote: “Soмєтнing working in RM’s favor is his history of self-reflection. Until he addresses it (if he even does) or I’m feeling much more stable in my feelings, I’ll stay where I am right now to figure things out. That’s all.”

Even so, Salonga emphasized that this does not erase the deep gratitude she has for BTS. The singer still acknowledges that the group helped her get through an especially difficult period during the ¢σνι∂-19 pandemic, even describing BTS’s music as soмєтнing that “saved my spirit” when she needed it most.
However, Lea Salonga’s explanation still does not appear to have been enough to convince or calm the ongoing debate within the ARMY community. Fans left comments including:
- Now everyone's true colors are being revealed. Thank you, RM and J-Hope. So, is she going to stop listening to BTS songs now? After all, most of the songs are written by RM and J-Hope.
- It's our fault. The moment someone praises the boys we start behaving like dogs. We start giving them platform & at the end of the day it bites us back each f*cking time. And their judgement doesn't matters to namseok so it would help if you guys also don't talk about it. Ignore
- She is CERTIFIED Taekookers. What do u expect of her? She will sacrifice every other 5 n also JK if she need to. She already hostile towrds JM for years. N noe its Joon n Hobi. What important for her is her fantasy of Tae f*ck JK. Anyone else? Not important at all
- If RM attending a concert by invitation is enough to demand accountability, then the same standard should apply to all. She can unfollow them. But holding thm to a standard she don't apply to her own αѕѕociations isn't accountability. It's selective accountability. Be consistent.
- she still follows some people mentioned in the post so it's still happening. she can't hold herself to the same moral standards she puts on namseok ESPECIALLY when it's already done. she's still FOLLOWING NOW.
- Just unfollowed all high and mighty disney princess. Felt good. Selective optics is just short for clout chasing toxic stan. She not Army.
- No need to publicize UNFOLLOWING Namjoon and Hobi. What's the motive to publicize?? To attract attention and spread hate on them? To get clout to do the same? Wow. BTS is SEVEN. if anyone wants to LEAVE, JUST LEAVE QUIETLY. Unless you want attention to yourself.
